Former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to Speak at UVI’s Student Convocation The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) has been selected to host a student convocation with Loretta E. Lynch, former United States attorney general, on Feb. 25, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. AG Lynch was appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2015 and served until 2017. She is the first African-American woman to be confirmed for the United States attorney general position.

The convocation will take place from 9-11 a.m. and will be video conferenced to the St. Thomas Campus. Transportation will be provided for a limited number of St. Thomas students who want to attend the event in person. The event will also be available via livestream on the UVI website.

The University will bestow an honorary degree upon the Loretta E. Lynch at the convocation. She is looking forward to meeting with and hearing from UVI students. Should anyone have specific questions, please submit them to udyer@uvi.edu with the captioned reference “Question for Attorney Lynch.”

Course Prepares Individuals for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification Exam Residents across the territory who are interested in enhancing their Microsoft Excel skills can take advantage of the upcoming introductory course

Introduction to Microsoft Excel is the first level in a three-part series that prepares individuals to sit for the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel 2016 Certification exam.

The course provides the basic concepts and skills to start being productive and covers how to create, save, share and print worksheets that contain various kinds of calculations and formatting.

The course will be offered on both St. Croix and St. Thomas on the respective campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands.

UVI Names Suzanne Darrow-Magras New UVI CELL Director The University of the Virgin Islands welcomes Suzanne Darrow-Magras, Ph.D., as the director for the UVI Center for Excellence in Leadership and Learning (UVI CELL). Darrow-Magras brings over 20 years of experience in education program management, online education, as well as career and technical education to the center. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Central Connecticut State University, in New Britain, Conn.; a master’s degree in instructional technology, in Danbury, Conn., and a Ph.D. in education technology and e-Learning from Northcentral University, in San Diego, Calif.

“I am thrilled to be back at the University of the Virgin Islands, and it’s an honor to lead UVI-CELL,” said Darrow-Magras.  “For over 17 years, UVI-CELL has supported the territory’s continuing education needs, and I’m excited about the new programs and services we are launching in 2020.”

Darrow-Magras is a visionary who is innovative and passionate about building relationships around education, creativity and problem solving throughout the community in the interest of meeting individuals’ and organizations’ needs of the territory.

UVI to Host Two-Day Course on Conflict Management on both Campuses in March The University of the Virgin Islands Center for Excellence in Leadership and Learning (UVICELL) is pleased to offer a two-day workshop on “Conflict Management – Appropriate Dispute Resolution” for residents across the territory. The two-day course is designed to provide participants with communication tools used by mediators and negotiators to guide conversations.

The course will be held as follows:

St. Thomas

March 5 – 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in at ACC-142 at UVI’s – St. Thomas Campus

St. Croix

March 19 – 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in NWW-103 of the Albert A. Sheen Campus

The course will use the PULSE framework (People Using Language Skills Effectively) to provide the basic foundation for good communication and appropriate dispute resolution. It is the structure for successful, effective conversations and an efficient and useful way to reach a resolution.

Afternoon on the Green Committee Calls for Cooks “Culture, Fun, and Food Aplenty for Afternoon on the Green 2020.” The Afternoon on the Green Committee is calling all cooks to sign-up to donate a dish that will be a tasty treat for patrons and impress Judges.

Never participated before?  Here is a chance to display your mouth-watering treats at one of the most anticipated occasions for good eats.

Bucs Play University of Puerto Rico-Carolina In the second half, UPR-Carolina cut the lead to eight points, 47-38, but UVI responded by scoring the next 11 points to get their lead back up to 17. After that UPR-Carolina never got within single digits and UVI secured the victory on Senior Night.

The Bucs were led by Keith Gilmore 24 points; Josh Goss and Felix Ramos both had 14 points; Kamoi Lake finished with 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for UVI.

Community Invited to the 1ST Great Mangrove Cleanup is scheduled for Feb. 22 on St. Croix at Salt River Bay Join volunteers for the first Great Mangrove Cleanup, which will be hosted on St. Croix from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Feb. 22.

This collaborative cleanup effort will take place at Salt River Bay and is focused on removing as much debris as possible, both from on land as well as in the water.

Interested volunteers can register at www.viepscor.org. Students are also able to receive community service hours for their time.

Light refreshments will be provided to volunteers post cleanup.

UVI Course Prepares St. Thomas Residents to Serve as Mediators on March 9 -13 The University of the Virgin Islands Center for Excellence in Leadership and Learning (UVI-CELL) is pleased to offer the 40-Hour Mediation Certification Course. The course is designed to provide participants with instruction in the process of mediation. The skills acquired in this course will prove invaluable in all areas of life. Through a combination of role plays, demonstrations, large group discussions and activities, this highly interactive training will take participants through the entire mediation process.

The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 9 – 13, at UVI-CELL on the St. Thomas Campus.

The course is ideal for persons who desire to become a mediator or professionals who wish to become more proficient and confident in facilitating conflict in the workplace, home and community. Instruction for this course will be provided by Nancy Love, author of “PUSLE.”
