Mother Laments Loss of Skim Boarding in VINP

Dear Editor,

I was disappointed to read that skim boarding has been wholly banned in the VINP. As the mother of two young boys, I am continually reminded that there are precious few productive activities with which a young person can entertain themselves here on our island. Although I agree with rangers and park officials that swimmers and sunbathers should be kept safe as well, I do feel that a compromise could be found.

Perhaps a more diplomatic approach is in order.  Rangers could talk to the skim boarders, explain the concerns, and get some feedback as to how to allow this activity with guidelines so that all parties win.

On this, the 50th anniversary of this wonderful institution, we should remember that the mission statement of the Department of the Interior includes promoting responsible use of resources as well as providing recreational opportunities.

We need to remember that the youth of our island are the park’s future ambassadors. We need to remember that there are plenty of things our kids can turn to that are far more disconcerting than skim boarding.

Thank you,
Damara Merten-Farwell
