Services were conducted Saturday, October 6, for Lucy Agatha Matthias Smith-Prince, also known as “Miss Lucy,” or “Mama,” who died September 28.

The viewing was at 9 a.m. at Emmaus Moravian Church with a funeral at 10 a.m. Burial was in Emmaus Moravian Cemetery.

Ms. Lucy was the first woman taxi driver on St. John. Her trademarks were a hibiscus in her hair and a floral arrangement in cow horns on the hood of all of her vehicles. She was an educator who taught many children on St. John at the Horace Mann School.

She is survived by her children, Eloise V. Smith-Hendricks, Linda V. Smith-Francis and William E. Smith; daughter-in-law, Cecilia M. Walters Smith; sister, Casilda Matthias Bonelli; grandchildren, Vernelle Smith de Lagarde, Peter C. Francis Jr., Neal O. Francis Sr., Kurt I. Hendricks, Ray Francis Sr., Laurie Lynn Francis, William E. Smith II, Odari Smith and Eric Philbert; great  grandchildren, Kwanza M. de Lagarde, Khalid E. de Lagarde, Khadija A. V. de Lagarde, Monet A. C. Francis, Brianna M.C. Francis, Nealia Francis, Juneal Francis, Neal Francis Jr., Sholome Francis, Shomoi Francis, Khalilah Francis, Ray Francis Jr., Laverne Francis, Renique Francis, Trevor Nicholas Friday Jr., Khaimal Venzen, Olivia Waters-Smith; and great-great-grandchildren Sekani N. L. de Lagarde, Sholidah Francis, Neja Thomas, Nyari Francis, Nicoya Friday, Trevor Nicholas Friday III, McKenzie Friday and Jaquan Francis; numerous nieces and nephews, special cousins, godchildren and friends, including her caregivers Ethel Brown and Annmarie Todman.
