Variably cloudy skies are expected today with isolated to scattered showers. Daytime high temperatures will be in the upper 80s to low 90s, with easterly winds at 10-15 miles per hour.
Hazardous marine conditions are forecast to continue through the weekend due to a series of northerly swells spreading across the local waters. Seas to eight feet are expected along the Atlantic waters and local passages. High rip current risk warnings, small craft advisories, high surf advisories, and coastal flood watches are all in effect.
IN THE TROPICS
Tropical Storm Jerry is becoming better organized, and is nearing hurricane strength. At 5 a.m., the center of Tropical Storm Jerry was located approximately 575 miles east of the Leeward Islands or about 787 miles east-southeast of the Virgin Islands. Top winds have increased to 70 miles per hour. The tropical storm is moving to the west-northwest at 16 miles per hour. The forecast calls for additional strengthening and Jerry could become a hurricane today, with little change in intensity through Saturday. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center. On the projected path provided by the National Hurricane Center, the center of Jerry should pass an estimated 136 miles north-northeast of St. John at 2 a.m. Saturday morning. At that time, Jerry is forecast to be a Category One hurricane with top winds of 75 miles per hour. The tropical storm force winds of Jerry are not expected to impact the Virgin Islands. There are no watches or warnings posted for the Virgin Islands.
A tropical wave located almost 1,000 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands is producing disorganized cloudiness and showers. Some development of this system is possible while the system approaches the Windward Islands this weekend or when it moves across the eastern Caribbean Sea early next week. There is a 30% chance of development through five days.
