If you and your family are looking for some more enriching activities during this pandemci, five V.I. story tellers will be livestreaming V.I. folklore on Tuesday nights for five weeks, starting May 5.

AARP in The Virgin Islands, in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, is offering the series, which will be livestreamed via the AARP Virgin Islands Facebook Page as a Facebook Live event beginning Tuesday, May 5 and every Tuesday, thereafter, for five weeks; May 12, 19, 26, and June 2 at 6 p.m. each day. The events will feature traditional folklore told by five recognized storytellers from the Virgin Islands, telling stories of yester-year.

According to a release from AARP, as the outbreak of the Coronavirus forced AARP to suspend all in person events, it began working on ways to offer virtual events to the public. This has resulted in the formation of new relationships, including this newly formed relationship between AARP VI and the VI Council on the Arts.

Storytelling is an integral part of Virgin Islands culture with strong ties to our ancestry on the continent of Africa. They evoke happiness, excitement, and healing. AARP VI and the VI Council on the Arts hopes to provide an outlet for individuals to discover and experience the power of storytelling, partake in this colorful, cultural expression and divert their attention from the anxieties of the present time. This is also a great way to involve children and provide them entertainment.

Other events, live streams and broadcasts will be offered via the AARP Virgin Islands Facebook Page. To connect and participate visit the AARP Virgin Islands Facebook Page at Facebook.com/aarpvi or search for AARP Virgin Islands on Facebook.
