State Office of Special Education to Hold Transition Parent Conference

The United States Virgin Islands Department of Education

The Virgin Islands Department of Education’s State Office of Special Education (SOSE) invites parents and guardians of students with special needs to its Transition Parent Conference, themed, “Supporting Students’ Success from High School to Careers.”

The conference will be held on Monday, Nov. 26, on St. Croix at the University of the Virgin Islands, Albert A. Sheen Campus Great Hall; it will be held on Thursday, Nov. 29, on St. Thomas at the Lockhart Elementary School. It will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on both days. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

The conference will assist parents and guardians with understanding how the Virgin Islands uses the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to promote effective transition planning. SOSE will inform attendees of the key players in transition planning; the agencies that are likely to be responsible for providing transition services; and how to develop appropriate, measurable post-secondary goals and discuss the IEP checklist.

Interested persons should RSVP to Dr. Renee Charleswell, state director, at renee.charleswell@vide.vi or Kathleen Merchant, data manager, at kathleen.merchant@vide.vi
