St. John Superbowl Wild Cats Repeat Champs, Jr. Boondox Come Out on Top

The Jr. Bulldogs and Jr. Boondox teams gather for a picture after the St. John boy’s flag football league Superbowl, which the Jr. Boondox won 16 to 12.

Island flag football action wrapped up in fantastic fashion on Friday night, March 25, at the Winston Wells ball field in Cruz Bay.

Both the St. John boy’s 8 to 12 year old and men’s league champions were decided in Superbowl games under the lights in front of a huge crowd.

The kids took the field first with the Jr. Boondox facing the Jr. Bulldogs. After a close and hotly contested game — which the Jr. Bulldogs had a chance to win right at the end — the Jr. Boondox prevailed by a score of 16 to 12.

In the men’s Superbowl it was the reigning champions Wild Cats — with their perfect season on the line — lining up against Dynasty, whose only loss of the season was dealt by the Wild Cats.

A defensive battle in the first half had both teams with only six points heading into the third quarter. But there was a lot more football to play. All squared up at the end of regulation, the final game in the third season of the St. John men’s flag football league headed to over time — the first game to reach OT all season.

“Unbelievable,” said announcer Andy Rutnik over the PA system.

With the teams trading a pair of touch downs and two point conversions, the game went into triple overtime before the Wild Cats were able to shut down’s Dynasty’s last two point conversion attempt to take the game 28 to 26.

League commissioner Brummel Germaine thanked sponsors Soggy Dollar Bar, Chelsea Drug, The Marketplace, Destination St. John, Zozo’s Restaurant, St. John Hardware, Woody’s Seafood Saloon, Grande Bay Resort, Iroquois Builders, Joy and Andy Stillman, Miles and Susan Stair and Cimmaron Property Management for making the season possible.

Both leagues will host an awards ceremony on Sunday, April 3, at Oppenheimer Beach from noon to 3 p.m.
