St. John Reports First Shooting of Year in Coral Bay on Jan. 2

St. John’s first shooting in 2006 occurred in Coral Bay in the early morning hours of Monday, Jan. 2. Daniel Spanel went to the V.I. Police Department’s Coral Bay Substation around 2:10 a.m. and reported he had been shot.

“He stated that he was in the parking lot adjacent to Paradise Warehouse around 2:10 a.m., and an unknown suspect came up to him and shot at him several times with a gun,” said VIPD Deputy Chief Angelo Hill. “The suspect took his wallet and shot him in the groin before leaving.”

It was not known whether the victim was in a vehicle or on foot at the time of the shooting.

Spanel, whose age was not known, was transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for the gunshot wound to his groin and contusions to his head and leg, Hill added.

Deputy Chief Hill did not comment on how the victim sustained the contusions.

The incident is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact the VIPD at 693-8880.
