Samuel Lawrence Leads Friends of Park Seminar in Sweet Sounds of Steel Pan

Young and old took part in the Friends’ popular seminar with Lawrence.

The sweet sound of steel pans drifted from the Love City Pan Dragon’s practice space on Thursday afternoon, February 8, and no one could tell the musicians were first-timers taking part in the Friends of the V.I. National Park’s latest seminar.

As part of the Friends’ Seminar Series, about 15 people hovered over pans and hung on every word uttered by director Samuel Lawrence, who was impressed with the novices.

“For first timers, they are excellent,” said Lawrence, who has led the Pan Dragons for the past 11 years.

Lawrence got some help during the lesson from star students Desi-anna Charles, an eleventh grader who has played pan for eight years, Zaid Sewer, a tenth grader who has also been playing steel drum for eight years and Shakwana Albert who has played for six years.

The Friends of the VINP Seminar Series runs through the end of April and upcoming events include an oil painting lesson led by Kat Sowa and a full moon hike to Ram Head.
