More than 710 people — the largest group ever — registered to run in this year’s 8 Tuff Miles race on Saturday morning, February 24.
Thirty-five U.S. states, Canada, France, the British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico were represented in the 11th annual race.
Twenty-six-year-old St. John resident Jeremy Zuber won the race for the fourth year in a row with a time of 50:14, averaging six minutes per mile.
This was the slowest time for Zuber, who ran the race in 49:20 in 2006, 50:02 in 2005 and 49:32 in 2004. Second place finisher 29-year-old Court Lilly of Hebron, Kentucky, was hot on Zuber’s heels, finishing with a time of 51:15.
At the Saturday afternoon, February 24, 8 Tuff Miles awards ceremony, Lilly vowed to return for next year’s race.

“I’ve got a dragon to slay,” he said as he glanced at Zuber.
Twenty-seven-year-old Sally Roberts of Watertown, Massachusetts, won the female division with a time of 1:04:12.
Roberts, who is training for the Boston marathon, beat out second place womens finisher 43-year-old Karen Ringheiser of Carlisle, Massachusetts by just 30 seconds.
People of all ages braved the steep terrain of the course, which begins by the National Park Visitors Center in Cruz Bay and finishes at the Coral Bay ball field, via Centerline Road.
Runners from age six to 78 participated in the race.
In the mens division, 42-year-old Nelson Dupere of Watertown, Massachusetts, took third place with a time of 56:25; 32-year-old Travis Warren of Woodstock, Maryland, took fourth place with a time of 56:54; and 30-year-old St. John resident Kevin Chipman of V.I. Pale Ale took fifth place with a time of 57:46.
Race Delay
In the womens division, 24-year-old St. John resident Chelsea Obrien took third place with a time of 1:06:23; 39-year-old Kim Russell of St. John took fourth place with a time of 1:10:15; and 28-year-old Bonnie Kingsbury of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts took fifth.
This year’s 8 Tuff Miles was delayed nearly an hour due to problems with the transportation of approximately 50 participants from St. Thomas, causing runners to experience a hotter race than usual.
One runner reportedly fell to heat exhaustion, and another runner stopped the race to assist the runner with heat exhaustion. A third runner reportedly did not finish the race due to a fall that required 14 stitches.
St. John residents took first place in the womens under 12 age group, 13 to 16, 17 to 19, 20 to 24, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 60 to 64, 65 to 69 and 70 and over; and in the mens 13 to 16 age group, 17 to 19 and 20 to 24.
