Patrick Smith Wins District’s Spanish Spelling Bee

Patrick Smith is surrounded by JESS school officials and classmate Akiah Conliffe.

Julius E. Sprauve School Acting Principal Alecia Wells, Spanish teacher Idalia Morales Scimeca and office manager Cleamena Duncan congratulated the St. Thomas-St. John District Spanish Spelling Bee champion, Patrick Smith, and his spelling bee alternate, Akiah Conliffe, when the two students arrived at the Cruz Bay ferry dock on Friday afternoon, March 2.

Eleven-year-old Smith and Conliffe practiced together for the spelling bee.

“I took the words home and practiced them,” said Smith. “I had a lot of help from Akiah.”

Smith’s Spanish teacher, Sci-meca, said she was proud of her student for winning the Spanish Spelling Bee.

“They made me so proud,” said Scimeca. “They proved that when a student decides to do something and puts their mind to it, they can do it.”
