The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Office of Ocean Exploration and Research hosts graduate and undergraduate students as Explorers-in-Training (EiT) in collaboration with NOAA’s Educational Partnership Program and Cooperative Science Centers.
A typical EiT placement will consist of a 20 to 30-day expedition either offshore aboard NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer and/or onshore at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Exploration Command Center (ECC) in Durham, N.H.
Standard experiences and training during an expedition include:
1) Acquisition and processing of multibeam data
2) Use of hydrographic processing and display software
3) Use of geographic information systems (GIS) software packages
4) Acquisition and processing of sub-bottom and fisheries sonars
5) Data management
6) Familiarity with at-sea routines
Requirements are:
1) U.S. citizenship for offshore opportunities
2) Ability to stand an eight-hour at-sea watch, for offshore opportunities
2) Familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office tools
3) Willingness to learn and follow shipboard Standard Operating Procedures
4) Interest in learning about seafloor mapping operations
