Some 30-35 middle school and high school female students will participate in a (Science – Technology – Engineering – Mathematics) STEM workshop organized by the Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands chapter of Women of AT&T (WOA). It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center – VIP Room, 2 John Brewers Bay, St. Thomas.
Women of AT&T is an employee resource group focused on professional development and community efforts to prepare students for the future.
The goal of the WOA Girls In Future Technologies (GIFT) Workshop is to get young girls interested in STEM education. The students participating in the workshop will be coming from: Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, Addelita Cancryn Junior High School, Antilles School, Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy, All Saints Cathedral School and the St. Thomas-St. John Girl Scouts.
Workshop participants will hear from speakers from University of the Virgin Islands IT and science and astronomy departments, Virgin Islands Next Generation Network, and Virgin Islands Children’s Museum on several topics, including coding, aerodynamics, astronomy, and careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
In-kind sponsors for the event include McDonald’s, the University of the Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Children’s Museum and Emerald Beach Resort.
