Man Assaulted Near School in Coral Bay

A handicapped homeless man was attacked on Monday morning, May 1, behind the V.I. Fire Department in Coral Bay while the nearby Guy H. Benjamin Elementary School was in session, according to Shawna Richards, V.I. Police Department spokesperson.

“An assault occurred around 8:15 a.m. on Monday, May 1, in the area of the Guy Benjamin School,” said Richards.

The incident occurred at a van the man was living in near the public dock. It was unclear whether school children witnessed the assault on the man, who previously lived in a shack in the mangroves near the former Pickles Deli.

Machete Reported Used
Reports that the victim was struck repeatedly with a machete were not confirmed.

“The male victim was struck repeatedly about the face and upper body by an undetermined instrument,” she said. “At this time I am unable to confirm that a machete was involved in the incident.”

The victim was treated at Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center and released, according to Richards.

Although the victim reportedly was able to identify his attacker, VIPD currently has no suspects, added Richards.

“At this time a suspect has not been located,” she said. “I am unable to provide any other information on a suspect at this time.”

The VIPD investigation is continuing and anyone with information is urged to contact the VIPD Leander Jurgen Command at 693-8880.
