The Office of the Governor, in conjunction with the Virgin Islands Department of Education, invites students in the St. Thomas-St. John District who completed the 11th Annual Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge, which was held June 6 to Sept. 20, to attend a day of fun from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 22, at Lockhart Elementary School.

The invitation-only event will celebrate the students’ achievement of reading five or more books during the summer months. Students turn in book tracking sheets to their teachers at the end of the three-month challenge and receive an invitation to the annual celebration. The fun day will include a variety of activities, including face painting, arts and crafts, games, music, food and more. In addition, the school with the most readers will receive special recognition, according to a press release issued Thursday by the Office of the Governor.

Local agencies and non-profits will also be present. The Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge invites students in grades K-6 attending public and private schools to read five or more books during the summer months. While the activity takes place in states across the U.S., in the Virgin Islands, students receive up to two grade-level books that are written and illustrated by Virgin Islands or Caribbean authors and illustrators.
