The U.S. Department of Transportation will give $20 million to build a parking and transportation center at Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and $7 million for renovations at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix, Delegate Stacey Plaskett’s office announced Tuesday.

“These grants are significant to the residents of the of St. Thomas and St. Croix and the U.S. Virgin Islands because they will allow the USVI Port Authority to continue promoting the wise use of these facilities for the betterment of the U.S. Virgin Islands and its people,” Plaskett said in a statement.

The St. Thomas work aims to improve transit access and operational capacity to shorten wait times.

The St. Croix work will renovate and expand roughly 6,550 square feet inside Rohslen Airport. The goal is to improve the structure’s ability to withstand powerful tropical weather. It may also restore and increase tourism and import/export opportunities.
