Relatively fair weather conditions are expected today. One or two isolated showers may affect the islands from time to time. Under a southeasterly wind flow peaking at 10-15 mph with higher gusts, daytime high temperatures are forecast to range between high 80s to low 90s.
Hazardous marine conditions with seas to eight feet are expected across the Atlantic waters due to a northeasterly swell. As a result, small craft advisories are in effect. Another larger swell, generated by Hurricane Humberto, is forecast to arrive on Thursday from the northwest. This will keep hazardous seas through the end of the week, and life-threatening rip currents across the western, northern, and eastern beaches of the islands.
IN THE TROPICS
Tropical Storm Jerry is located some 960 miles east of the Leeward Islands. This weather system, formerly Tropical Depression Ten, was upgraded to a tropical storm overnight. Top winds are at 45 miles per hour with additional intensification forecast. Jerry is expected to be a hurricane by the time it approaches the northern Leeward Islands on Thursday night into Friday. The tropical storm is moving to the west-northwest at 13 miles per hour. Tropical storm force winds extend outward 45 miles from the center. On the current track provided by the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Jerry will pass approximately 130 miles north-northeast of St. John at 1 a.m. Saturday. At that time, Jerry is forecast to be a Category One hurricane with top winds of 75 miles per hour.
Also, an area of low pressure is expected to develop this weekend just east of the Windward Islands. Some gradual development is possible as it moves west to west-northwest over the islands of the eastern Caribbean.
Another tropical wave is forecast to emerge off the coast of Africa on Thursday. Gradual development is possible over the weekend as the system moves generally westward at 10-15 miles per hour.
