DCLA St. John Office Under Stapleton Is in Good Hands

Karen Stapleton

The Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs’ (DCLA) St. John office has been in good hands since Leona Smith left the department to take over as island administrator.

Karen Stapleton, the new St. John coordinator for DCLA,  has been enjoying her work while keeping everything in order at the Battery office.

“I love the new job,” said Stapleton. “I love meeting the people and I’m happy to be here to serve the community.”

A native of Nevis, Stapleton has been a Love City resident for 27 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of the Virgin Islands and previously worked at Caneel Bay Resort for 20 years before taking over the reins for DCLA’s St. John office.

Ready for Change
“I enjoyed being at Caneel, but change is good,” said Stapleton.

The DCLA office at the Battery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Stapleton is sometimes at the St. Thomas office or in the field. Call 693-8036 to make sure the office is open.

While it could be said the DCLA office is a stepping stone for the St. John Administrator position, Stapleton is happy where she is.

“I am not interested in getting into politics,” Stapleton said. “I’m happy right here.”
