Cook-Rutnik To Exhibit at Mixed Media Gallery

Janet Cook-Rutnik

St. John artist Janet Cook-Rutnik, along with St. Thomas photographer Jessica Rosenberg will present new works at St. Thomas’ newest gallery, Mixed Media in Red Hook, on Thursday, March 20, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The large white-walled warehouse space looks like something from Chelsea or South Beach — a fine art gallery where art is truly the focus.
“It is a thrill to show artwork in such a clean, contemporary setting,” said Cook-Rutnik.

The show, “New Media at Mixed Media,” represents concepts the artist began working on two years ago while a resident artist at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. The videos and installations are from a larger series of works entitled Migrations and The Journey, which include digital images shot while traveling through New York City, the Caribbean and Africa.

Some of these images have also been painted on canvas and a video including footage from New York and the Virgin Islands will also be on view.
Rosenberg, who has been making art for the past 40 years, will display a collection of her black and white photos. Her “street” photographs have been shot all over the world as well as the Virgin Islands. Rosenberg works primarily with 35mm and medium format film, which she develops and prints in her darkroom on St. Thomas. Many of her photos document the ever-changing face of St. Thomas as it has evolved from her arrival in 1985 to the present time.

The public is invited to attend the preview opening. For more information, call the gallery at 513-7200.
