Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett (USVI), a senior whip for the House Democratic Caucus, has been appointed to serve on the House Oversight and Reform Committee. This comes as a special third assignment to the Congresswoman who will also serve on the Agriculture Committee as well as the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

Members are given two committee assignments, so receiving a third comes only at the approval of the leadership of the Democratic Caucus. The congresswoman issued the following statement:

“I want to thank the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee and Speaker Pelosi for appointing me to the House Oversight and Reform Committee. It is imperative that this committee serve as an oversight to examine federal response and support for hurricane recovery efforts in the Virgin Islands along with issues with the Department of Interior, our National Parks and the United States Postal Service. The committee is the primary investigative body in the House, and under the leadership of Chairman Elijah Cummings the committee will address the government’s effectiveness in supporting the American people. The American people voted for accountability and transparency this past election, and I am eager to work in a bipartisan manner on behalf of all of our constituents to deliver on these goals.

As a former prosecutor and Justice Department official, I understand that my experience will be utilized front and center to support the committee in some of its important work this term. The House Oversight and Reform Committee will conduct oversight of President Trump’s administration. The long neglect of meaningful House oversight on our nation’s most serious problems in recent years ends now with Democrats serving in the majority in the House.”
