The winners of the “No Straw, Please” social media video competition were announced at the end of July. The joint effort between the Coral Bay Community Council, Get Trashed-St. John, and Plastic Free Island: St John, aimed to engage the community in a pledge to reduce plastic waste.
Participants were challenged to film their own 30 to 60 second video about the impact of plastic straws on the environment. Entrants managed to capture that theme in a variety of informative, and even comical ways.
The winner and runner-up videos have been scheduled to play on the NBS affiliate in the Virgin Islands between August 7 and August 14 during the Today Show time slot. Be sure to tune in!
Here is the winning video by Leah Burke.
The runner-up was created by Gina Wellner and her daughter along with a friend.

Please watch our short film about reducing plastic straw use in the USVI.Most of us know the dangers of straws to marine life… So we decided to do more of a funny twist on the subject. Next time the bartender offers you a straw don't be afraid to say "No thank you."*The straws used in this video were all collected from St. Thomas beaches including over 200 straws from Coki beach in only 2 days.
