St. John residents noticed this large column of black smoke rising from St. Thomas' East End on Wednesday morning, April 9, after an explosion at the Bovoni Landfill was reported. This time-lapse video of the fire was captured by Estate Pastory resident Bob Schlesinger (Tropical Focus).

The V.I. Police Department reportedly cordoned off the area from Nadir to Frenchman's Reef, and St. Thomas firefighters were at the scene along with the V.I. National Guard, according to one eyewitness.

V.I. Department of Health Commissioner Vivian Ebbesen-Fludd urged residents to stay indoors and keep windows closed, as smoke from the fire can pose a risk to those with allergy and respiratory problems.
