For at least the eighth time in the last year and the fourth time this year, the Anguilla Landfill on St. Croix was closed Saturday because of a fire.

In a news release issued Saturday, the V.I. Waste Management Authority advised the community of an active fire reported at the Anguilla Landfill. V.I. Fire Service and VIWMA contractors and personnel were working to bring the fire under control.

VIWMA advised the public and haulers that landfill operations have been temporarily suspended. Haulers are asked to hold waste until normal operating hours resume. Residents with respiratory disorders/conditions were encouraged to take precautions to minimize their exposure to smoke as wind directions change. The Authority said it will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health, the environment and haulers utilizing the landfill.
