Already Incarcerated, Akil Gumbs Arrested Again After VIPD Find 18 Marijuana Plants on Porch

A St. John man was arrested while already incarcerated at the Bureau of Corrections last week after V.I. Police Department officers found 18 marijuana plants on the porch of his Calabash Boom home.

Akil Gumbs, 31, was first picked up by VIPD officers on Wednesday, February 22, after he failed to appear in court on a third-degree assault charge. When VIPD officers arrested Gumbs in Cruz Bay on February 22, they found 13 dime bags of crack cocaine in his possession.

Gumbs was taken to the Bureau of Corrections on February 22 and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute and Failure to Appear, in addition to his original Third Degree Assault charge, which stems from a June 2011 incident.

A VIPD search of Gumbs’ Estate Calabash Boom home on Friday, February 24, turned up 18 marijuana plants “in various stages of development” as well as hundreds of Ziploc bags, fanta tobacco — often used as an additive to marijuana cigarettes — and a mason jar filled with cannabis seeds, according to a report in the V.I Daily News.

Gumbs was arrested again on a warrant Monday, February 27, while incarcerated at the Bureau of Corrections on St. Thomas and charged this time around with Manufacturing a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

He was advised of his rights before V.I. Superior Court Magistrate Judge Alan Smith on Tuesday, February 28. In addition to Gumbs’ previous pending charges, Smith held Gumbs on a $10,000 bail for the marijuana manufacturing charge. The Calabash Boom man had not posted bail as of press time, according to the report in the V.I. Daily News.

Gumbs’ arraignment is scheduled for March 15 at 9 a.m. in V.I. Superior Court’s Magistrate Division, according to the V.I. Daily News report.
